My Name is Rachel Corrie to Premiere in Cleveland

The play My Name is Rachel Corrie will premiere in Cleveland next weekend at Cleveland Public Theater as part of their Big Box series. We spoke with director Trad A. Burns and actress Elizabeth Wood on yesterday's Guerrilla Radio about what inspired them to bring this play to Cleveland and how it changed them in the process. The play starts February 16th and runs through the 18th. Rachel was killed in 2004 while standing in the way of an Israeli bulldozer in the Gaza Strip as part of the International Solidarity Movement. You can check out Rachel's memorial website here.

I am personally outraged that this play was created about that stupid girl. The quality of the play the artwork it represents is entirely beside the point. I see no reason to elevate somebody who represents the large number of morally confused people who just don't understand history and the meaning of a true moral compass.

I am disturbed by the polemics and the producers of this play are not exactly Judeophiles either. Katharine Viner is associated with the Guardian - a paper that is openly anti-Semitic.

I am staying away from this play, and will strongly encourage others to do the same. I hope the Jewish Community of Cleveland will voice its outrage.

The play debuted back in February and is no longer on stage at CPT. Rachel Corrie was not a "stupid girl." She was a very brave and determined woman who stood up, literally, against the bulldozing of Palestinian homes by the IDF. If the anyone, whether in the Jewish community or not, supports the regular wreckage the IDF brings down on the people of Palestine it would not be surprising if they opposed the actions of Corrie. As for me, I'll continue to celebrate the life and honor the death of Rachel Corrie.
